History
Our Practice has been here since the Whitgift Shopping Centre opened in 1970. It was established by Mr Norman Goldberg and taken over by the present owner Shahin Lalani in 1998. She had worked at the practice since 1994; she loved it so much she bought the company!

About Us
Our team comprises three dentists, a hygienist, practice manager/receptionist and three dental nurses. We are highly skilled and committed to providing excellent dental care within a friendly, comfortable environment. We have an extremely low turnover of staff so you can expect continuity of care and treatment.

About our team
Dr Shahin Lalani: Shahin qualified at Bristol University in 1986 and joined Norman Goldberg’s practice in 1994. Shahin bought the practice from Norman in 1998 and then began a major programme of refurbishment and redevelopment of the practice into its current form.
Shahin’s interest is in high quality general dentistry with specialist assistance where appropriate. She has completed 3 years of postgraduate courses in Advanced Restorative Techniques and loves nothing more than restoring confidence in patients while rebuilding their dentition.

Dr Geof Harrison: Geof qualified at Bristol University in 1965. Geof ran own his own practice in London before travelling for a year. He spent 5 years in practice in Australia. Geof joined the practice full time in 1989 having previously worked as a locum here in 1979.

Dr Niclas Fagerberg: Nic qualified at Gothenburg University, Sweden in 1999. He is a member of ITI,the International Team for Implantology. Nic joined the practice in 2001.His special interests are cosmetic dentistry,implant surgery,oral surgery and nervous patients.

Dental Hygienist/Therapist
Dental Hygienists play an essential role in a preventative dental practice. They are skilled professionals who have a key part to play in the prevention and treatment of gum disease. Gum disease is the biggest single cause of adult tooth loss and a problem which we take very seriously. Use them to increase your awareness of how to prevent dental disease. They are highly trained professionals and not just there to clean teeth!

Marnie Hayward: Marnie qualified at the St Bartholomew’s and Royal London Hospital School of Medicine and Dentistry in 1998 with Diplomas in Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy as well as the Certificate in Dental Radiography.
Marnie works part time as a tutor of dental hygiene/therapy students and this enables her to keep up to date with the latest advances in treatment, advice and dental products. Marnie enjoys helping patients achieve a high standard of oral health and is particularly interested in helping nervous and anxious patients overcome their fears.

Practice Manageress/Receptionist – Miss Julie Letts
Many of you will already know Julie as she has worked at Whitgift Dental for longer that she cares to remember! Her role as Practice Manageress firmly places her in a position which she relishes. Julie deals with the day to day running of the Practice. Every task you can imagine from Health and Safety to changing a light bulb! Need we say more!

The Dental Nurses
Where would we be without our Dental surgery assistants! Their training provides them with the skills to assist the Dentist deliver your treatment and care. But that's only the beginning! As the name suggests they are so much more than a dental nurse. From personal assistant to patient councillor they provide a vital role in making sure your visit is as pleasant as possible

In return we expect from our patients the following:
Your cooperation in making and keeping appointments. Should it be necessary to change an appointment we require at least 24 hours notice.
We do make a nominal charge for missed appointments, but it is never our wish to do so.
Your health and comfort are our primary concerns. Please let us know of any condition requiring special attention or any changes in your health during treatment.
If any problem should arise, at any time, please inform the Dentist, Practice Manager, or an appropriate staff member so we may have the opportunity to resolve the matter.

Financial Policies:
Treatment plans are presented to all patients before any work begins.
We consult with our patients so that the various options for treatment and the likely costs are discussed and agreed prior to commencement. If at any time it is necessary to change the treatment plan and additional charges or credits are applicable, this is explained to the patient and agreed to before treatment is continued.
Our patients understand that in order to deliver optimum dentistry, we must maintain our office on sound business principles. Therefore, we inform our patients of our financial policies at the very beginning of our relationship to avoid any misunderstandings. We accept major credit cards, cash and personal cheques.
Payment for each appointment is due at the time the service are rendered.
Extended payment plans are available for qualified individuals for subsequent treatment under our interest free financial plan for amounts over £750.00.

Treatments
Restorative Dentistry
Restorative Dentistry is the restoration of decayed or broken teeth and can involve amalgam fillings, white fillings, inlays or crowns.

The replacement of missing teeth is an extension of restorative dentistry and this can involve the provision of dentures, bridgework or implants. A denture is a removable prosthesis and has to be taken out and cleaned, while bridges and implants are permanently cemented into the mouth and are cleaned as normal with the rest of the teeth.

Amalgam Fillings
Silver amalgam fillings have been used for over 150 years and have many advantages over other restorative materials such as low cost, strength, durability and bacteriostatic effects. Their main disadvantages are poor aesthetics and the presence of mercury in the material.

White Fillings
White fillings can look very natural as they are available in different shades to match your own natural tooth colour. There are now new materials available with properties comparable to silver amalgam and these are proving to be successful.

Inlays
Where a tooth is badly broken down it may need to be restored with an inlay, which is a filling that is much stronger because it is custom- made outside the mouth and cemented into place, or a crown which protects the whole of the tooth. Inlays and Crowns can be made in white (tooth - coloured) porcelain or gold where strength is paramount.

Crowns
A crown is an artificial restoration that fits over the remaining part of a prepared tooth, making it strong and giving it the shape of a natural tooth. It can be in a variety of materials which can be tooth - coloured (porcelain) or gold (where strength is paramount).

Dentures
A denture is a plate with a number of false teeth on it and can be all plastic (acrylic) or acrylic with a light metal base. The latter one is less bulky, more secure and stronger but is more expensive.

Bridges
Where there are only a few teeth missing and the other teeth are strong and have good bone support it may be possible to restore the gap with natural looking porcelain teeth.

Implants
Implants are an exciting and innovative method to replace missing teeth and we are very pleased to be able to offer to this service. A dental implant is a titanium metal rod which is placed into the jaw bone. It functions as an artificial tooth root and is used to support a replacement tooth or bridge.

Cosmetic Dentistry
Advances in dentistry means that everyone can now have a beautiful smile.

This can be achieved through tooth whitening, veneers or porcelain crowns.
Tooth whitening is an easy non-invasive treatment that immediately can make you look younger simply by brightening your smile!

Veneers are a thin layer of porcelain that is made to fit over the front surface of a tooth. They are used to improve the colour, shape and / or position of a tooth or several teeth.

Porcelain crowns are used where the teeth need strengthening e.g. because they have broken or are weakened by a very large filling or a root filling. The replacement of missing teeth is a branch of restorative dentistry and can be with dentures, bridges or implants.


General & Preventive Dentistry
The two major causes of tooth loss are gum disease and tooth decay. Both of these are caused by a build - up of plaque: a sticky bacterial film that covers the teeth. The hygienist is professionally qualified to:

Help control plaque levels by regularly removing any deposits and polishing the teeth to make them smooth, shiny and plaque-free;
Educate the patient in their individual oral hygiene regimes. In most cases this means brushing and flossing between the teeth. There are many gadgets now available to help make this task easier;
Carry out preventative measures such as fissure sealing or fluoride treatments.

As people keep their teeth for longer the emphasis in Dentistry is changing from treatment to prevention and Hygienists are one of the most important personnel in delivering this change. Use them to increase your awareness on how to prevent dental disease and keep your breath fresh!
